Internship Experiences

My time at the Office of Management and Budget during my freshman and sophomore years of college was truly meaningful. Rotating through all departments, I was trusted with important projects that pushed me to grow and learn every day. I gained valuable insights into the business world and developed both professional skills and personal confidence. Most importantly, I built lasting relationships with mentors and colleagues who inspired and supported me along the way. This experience shaped not just my career path, but also how I approach challenges and opportunities in life.

My time here at OMB was nothing short of a great experience and way to kick off my career in finance. During my time, I learned countless things about how the State budget works and how all of the State money is managed. Everybody I had the chance to work with was very welcoming and more than willing to teach me. This internship helped me land a full time job in finance after I graduated from the University of Delaware and paved the way for a successful career to come.

I began my internship with OMB in August 2022, at a time when our team was much smaller than it is today. Coming in with little prior background in accounting and finance and no prior knowledge of the state budget, I was grateful for the opportunity to explore different sections and learn from experienced colleagues. From the start, I felt supported. Everyone was welcoming, willing to answer questions, and invested in helping me succeed.
During my internship, I discovered how much I enjoy applying my organizational and analytical skills in this environment. Throughout my journey, I have been mentored, which has helped me gain confidence in technical skills, communication skills and relationship-building.
This experience laid the foundation for my transition to a full-time merit position and ultimately my continued growth within Financial Operations. I’m especially grateful for the mentorship and support I’ve received along the way and proud to have grown alongside our expanding team. I look forward to continuing to contribute as we evolve together!

My Internship at OMB was a great experience. I worked with a lot of great people that taught me so much about the state and how FSF works. I learned all about Payment Vouchers, Intergovernmental Vouchers, Purchase Orders, PCards, and Fleet Authorizations. I helped with some state projects like SWCAP, Inventory Recon Project, and Capital Projects to State Record. During my internship we took trips to different state agencies, and I got to learn about the different organizations and how they contribute to the state. Having this experience from my internship at OMB helped me get an internship with Division of Accounting.

My experience at OMB was very educational and beneficial. I had the opportunity to gain new skills, network, and learn about Delaware State jobs while working with a great team. This internship gave me real life experience in accounting as well as collaboration. The supportive team there helped me grow both personally and professionally. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with OMB.

I interned with OMB from November 2022 to May 2023, and shortly after, I received a full-time offer as an Administrative Officer.
During my internship, I had the opportunity to work across every department, which gave me exposure to areas beyond accounting and helped me build a comprehensive understanding of finance as a whole. OMB truly invested in my growth, not only by giving me hands-on experience, but also by supporting my attendance at conferences that expanded my knowledge of state government and its many functions.
That support empowered me to take the lead on my own projects and contribute meaningfully to the organization. I felt heard throughout the process, and that confidence has carried into my current role.

My experience with the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has been very rewarding. As an intern, I had the opportunity to engage in a variety of hands-on experiences that allowed me to learn new skills and gain valuable insights into public sector operations. I also regularly collaborated with upper management to track expenditures, resolve discrepancies, and uphold fiscal accountability. This experience has deepened my understanding of financial management within the government and increased my knowledge of how budgeting functions in the public sector. After interning at OMB for six months, I was offered a full-time position and later promoted to Fiscal Advisor I within the Fleet Department. In addition to technical skills, I have had the opportunity to meet and learn from professionals across various departments, which broadened my perspective and enriched my professional network. The knowledge and relationships I’ve built through this experience have equipped me with the tools and confidence to continue advancing in a career in finance or public administration.

Fiscal Advisor I, Office of Management and Budget

My experience at the office of management and budget was a pivotal moment in my college career. I began working with OMB during my freshman year and continued for a year and six months. During that time, I gained valuable knowledge across two different departments while also building meaningful friendships. Looking back, I truly believe that anyone would be fortunate to take part in the experience of being an intern working for the government.
